A Model for Coexistence of People and Wild Elephants According to the Philosophy of HRM King Bhumibol Adulyadej: A Case Study of Kaeng Hang Maeo District, Chanthaburi Province
This research aimed to synthesize the philosophy of HRM King Bhumibol
Adulyadej with the coexistence between people and wild elephants in Kaeng Hang Maeo District, Chanthaburi Province, and to propose a managerial model of the coexistence between people and wild elephants according to this philosophy. A qualitative research method based on an interdisciplinary research approach was used in this study.
The results revealed that the synthesis of the coexistence between humans
and wild elephants according to this philosophy was divided into 3 concepts including:
the value of elephants, the coexistence between people and wild elephants, and the
measures to solve the problems of humans and wild elephants. The findings about
structural factors leading to human-elephant conflicts identified 4 factors including:
the expansion of the public sectors into the communities, capitalism, climate change,
and ecological effects of the increasing wild elephant population. The model of
coexistence between people and wild elephants according to the philosophy of HRM
King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the balanced coexistence between people and wild
elephants and was also known as the Chanthaburi Model. The model could be
appropriately and efficiently applied, and powered by 6 significant measures consisting
of: caring for wild elephants, protecting people, surveillance of wild elephants, keeping
wild elephants out of human settlements, sharing the use of resources between
humans and wild elephants, and providing compensation and remedies for damage
caused by wild elephants.
