Critical reading skills are difficul. Students have few chances to practice critical reading skills due to lack of proper methods, so they cannot analyze the essay when reading stories. They also have many problems concerning those skills. The purposes of this research were to study the develiopment of critical English reading skills of Mathayomsuksa 2 students before and after leamning management by using the SO3R reading technique and mind maps, and to study English language leaming achievement of these students by using the SQ3R reading technique and mind maps. The sample was a group of 30 Mathayomsuksa 2 students from Klongyaiwitayakom School, Klongyai District, Trat Province, which is under the Office of Secondary Educational Service Area Office 17 (Chanthaburi - Trat). The group was sclected by purposive sampling.
The experiment was sct up for 12 hours. The rescarch instruments used were: 1) 6 lesson plans using the SQ3R reading technique and mind maps, 2) a 30- item critical reading skills test, 3) a 30- item leaming achievement test. The design of this rescarch was the pretest – posttest design. The statistics used were: mean, standard deviation and t-test.
